Swimwear buying guide

The ultimate guide to...

With so many styles, shapes and colours it can be difficult to choose a swimsuit that is just right for you and your body shape. To help you we have put together a useful guide so that you don't feel out of your depth.

The athletic shaped body is quite straight and toned. When choosing swimwear to suit the athletic body shape women should consider padded tops, for extra lift, and tie sides to add curves.

The apple shaped body is square on top with skinny legs. Tips for buying a swimsuit include wearing a one-piece to add curves and vertical prints to elongate the body.

The pear shaped body is larger on the bottom and narrow on the shoulder. When choosing swimwear, pear shaped women should look for detail on the top and consider padding if they want more cleavage.

The hourglass figure has been called the perfect body shape. A feature of the hourglass is that the shoulders are in line with your hips. If you are an hourglass and top heavy you should consider a halterneck style.

One-piece swimsuit

Ideal for those who prefer not to wear a two-piece, one-piece swimsuits come in various styles and shapes, from the skimpy and sexy to the pull-me-in and figure flattering - some have the advantage of hidden cups/support and tummy control. Different styles include: shoulder straps, halter neck, adjustable straps, strapless. Fuller busts and figures can benefit from this style, depending on choice of colour and prints.

The bikini is the classic two-piece suit and has the benefit of being adjustable to each individual. Choose from a variety of styles including triangle top, under-wired cups, side tie bikini briefs and shorties.

A good way of hiding your tummy without completely covering up, a tankini can come with benefits such as removable cups and hidden support. Styles vary from sport tankinis to leisure tops with various colours and prints. Halter neck, strapless and conventional straps are available.

Choosing a colour

Colours are an important factor when choosing the right swimwear style to suit, for it is ideal if you can find one to flatter your natural skin tone. If you're fair and have a tendency to go pink when you're in the sun, avoid all variations of pink and red - this shade will not suit sun-flushed skin. If you have a yellowish complexion - avoid browns, yellow and oranges and instead go for shades of blue and green. If you're naturally dark skinned, then you're lucky as most colours will suit you.

Swimwear care guide

Once you have purchased your swimwear, you can help prolong the life of each garment if the following is carried out.

  • Embellished/decorative styles generally have special wash care needs and extra care should be taken to prolong the life of the embellishment whether it be sequins, beadings or prints. Please ensure these type of products are hand washed only.
  • Rinse in fresh water immediately after use. This will prolong the life of the garment by minimising the exposure to chlorinated water and or sea water.
  • Use gentle detergent, rinse thoroughly and drip dry.
  • Whenever possible always dry swimwear away from direct sunlight.
