Top Tips

Hats and fascinators are both occasionwear but, sometimes, which to choose can be a hard decision to make. For most outfits and occasions either will do, but here are some points for you to consider.

  • At a garden party some hats can seem too formal, so a simple fascinator might be preferable.
  • If you're wearing a statement fascinator, team with stud earrings - remember, less is more.
  • Think ahead. If you're going to an event that has a reception you may want to take your headpiece off at some point, so a hat may be a more appropriate choice.
  • Accessory-wise, a hat offers the freedom to go a little larger in the earring department.

Measuring Guide

UK hat sizes are measured in inches and European hat sizes are measured in centimetres. To discover your hat size, you need to calculate the circumference of your head:

  • You will need a tape measure - alternatively, you can also use a piece of string or a long strip of paper so that you can measure it against a ruler.
  • Place the tape measure, string or paper so that it rests just above the brow at the front of the head and touches the top of the ears. Pull the tape around the head so that it is taut but not too tight.
  • Take the measurement and then refer to the chart below.
  • N.B If your head size falls between two sizes it is recommended that you size up, to ensure comfort - too small hats can lead to headaches.
