Lime is fast growing and can be used as a stand-alone tree or as part of a mixed hedgerow scheme. Lime Hedging Plants are fast growing and have attractive heart shaped leaves. They are commonly mixed into native hedgerows or planted singularly to grow into large trees on their own. They are a good choice for an avenue of trees. Country houses often had an avenue of majestic limes to impress approaching guests. The perfume emitted by the small green flowers is beautiful; the scent carries for miles and this alone makes them a good choice. Lime produces shoots which turn a fiery red colour in Winter, adding to the year round attractiveness of this plant. We recommend 5 plants per metre in a double zig-zag row for a thick hedge, but you can get away with 3-4 per metre in a staggered row if you don't mind waiting an extra year or two to form a thick hedge. Keep them well watered - especially in the Spring and Summer in the first year of planting.
