The RF-4E is the tactical reconnaissance version of McDonnell's famous two-seater multirole fighter Douglas Phantom II. It was developed specifically for export and was the combination of the RF-4C's reconnaissance systems with the aerodynamic structure and enhanced F-4E engines. Luftwaffe received the first specimens in the early 1970s and became one of the main users along with Japan, Iran, Israel and Greece. Many components and reconnaissance systems were also produced in Germany. The RF-4E was able to perform all-time reconnaissance missions and was able to map terrain, thanks to infrared sensors, target search systems and shooting equipment, very effectively and accurately. Some countries also created versions dedicated to specific operational use.
