It is derived from the bark and branches of the Amyris balsamifera tree through steam distillation. The wood contains a high oil content, allowing it to burn on its own like a candle, which is why it is referred to as candle wood by locals. This oil serves as a more affordable alternative to pure sandalwood. Amyris oil has been used historically to clean wounds, treat influenza, and aid in digestion issues like diarrhea. It is said to be effective in alleviating cystitis and vaginal infections. When used in a vaporizer, it helps relieve anxiety, tension, and insomnia, while also serving as an aphrodisiac to address impotence and frigidity. It is known to support the treatment of coughs, colds, and bronchitis, and its calming effects are beneficial for meditation. Additionally, it acts as a muscle relaxant and emollient. The true botanical origin of the tree was not identified until 1886, when microscopic examination of its leaves distinguished it from true sandalwood. The Amyris balsamifera tree grows wild in Haiti. In ancient times, essential oils were considered so valuable that they were regarded as more precious than gold.
