Maria Muldaur digs deep into the songbook of Victoria Spivey here, turning a tribute project into a full-blooded blues set with wit, warmth and plenty of lived-in style. The material reaches back to the bawdy, pre-war side of the blues, but the performances feel lively rather than museum-bound.Muldaur sounds completely at home in these songs, and the guest spots from Elvin Bishop and Taj Mahal only add to the fun. My Handy Man, One Hour Mama and Organ Grinder Blues are obvious highlights, but the whole album carries the right mix of sass, swing and deep respect.SIDE ONE:1. My Handy Man2.
