Jim, Dossie, his wife, and their son Hector live in travel trailers, traveling from park to park around America They educate Hector in libraries and sustain themselves through hunting and fishing. A simple and and happy life until Dossie, in mid life, buys a house, wanting to settle down. Jim and Hector try to adapt to staying in one place. Dossies sudden changes keep coming fast and furious. They confuse Jim and Hector, and they become fearful of her new behavior. Dossie starts trying to control their every move and befriends other women who are against them and support her bossiness. They sleep out in their RVs not in her house.When Dossie calls the sheriff on them for not minding her the second time, they have to act. They escape her clutches in their RVs and head north.
