Our Log Dowel Growing Kit is designed for outdoor use, and for those wishing to grow mushrooms naturally using their own cut (unseasoned) logs. It contains: 30 inoculated timber dowels inside a sterilized plastic grow bag with filter patch, wax, sponge applicator and full set of instructions. We advise using fresh or recently felled (up to 8 weeks) hardwood logs up to 50cm in length (10-20cm in diameter) such as alder, oak, beech, birch, poplar or willow. We recommend avoiding sycamore, cherry and ash, conifers or soft woods. The logs should also have no signs of damage or other fungal growth. Please note that holes will need to be drilled into the logs to accommodate the dowels (we recommend an 8.5mm drill bit) and you should expect to see your first mushrooms from 9 months to 1 year after your logs have been inoculated. Once fruiting, you could be harvesting fresh mushrooms for approximately 3 years. Please note: It is not recommended to mix different strains of mushroom dowels within one log.
