The mighty Nile River is famous for supporting some of the most ancient and sophisticated cultures in human history. The lifegiving headwaters of the longest river in the world (it flows through a quarter of Africa!) begin in the high mountains of Ethiopia at Lake Tana, which feeds the river Abay. Over its thousandmile journey, the Abay provides nourishment, transportation, hydration, entertainment and habitat for rare and wonderful plants, birds, animals and cultures. The story of the Abay is the story of life in much of Africa, and we explore its journey with detailed watercolors by watercolor artist/teacher Trish Johnston and her 4 talented grandkids.Open Hearts Big Dreams Ready Set Go (OHBDRSG) Books were created to help increase the literacy rate in Ethiopia through giving readers books with stories in their heart languages, full of colorful illustrations with Ethiopian settings and details. Profits from book sales are used to create, print, and distribute more OHBDRSG books to kids in Ethiopia, Africas second most populous country. Ethiopias population has a high percentage of children ages 014. Only a small percentage attend preschool or kindergarten, and the adult literacy rate is around 50%.Some of our books are based on wise Ethiopian sayings that often rhyme in Amharic.
