I confess to reading this book as part of my research into the location, and broomsquires, but I absolutely loved the story. Accepting that it is very much of its time, the effective evocation of place, and the sharp focus on character meant that the I found the simple plot to be gripping throughout the book. Yes, it is depressing, and has a Hardyesque foreboding, but it is beautifully crafted, and for someone who grew up wandering the paths in the bottom of the Devils Punch Bowl, and seeking the sailors stone up on the old road, it was a joy. His bibliography consists of more than 1240 publications, though this list continues to grow. His family home, the manor house of Lew Trenchard, near Okehampton, Devon, has been preserved as he had it rebuilt and is now a hotel. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the bestknown being "Onward, Christian Soldiers" and "Now the Day Is Over". He also translated the carol "Gabriels Message" from the Basque language to English.
