Wedding Day Skin Prep: Dos & Don’ts

It’s one of the biggest milestones of your life – and it’s no surprise you want your skin to look its best. You might be considering a few new treatments and tweakments to make it a reality, but before you go overhauling your entire routine, it might be wise to read our ultimate dos and don’ts of wedding day skin prep.

1) DO keep skincare routines simple

We understand you want to solve every concern before your big day – but an overloaded routine can confuse your skin, leading to further issues. Instead, pare back your routine and take it right back to basics. A cleanser, toner & moisturiser are the safest bet, with a treatment your skin trusts incorporated now and again for good measure – like a hydrating or brightening serum, or a retinol if you feel your complexion needs some pro-ageing power.

2) DON’T try anything new at least 1 month before your wedding

The old-age adage ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ has never been more apt. While new products for some may not become an issue, for others, it can cause redness, breakouts, dryness or flaking, so it isn’t worth trying so close to your wedding. Lock your routine down over a month before and don’t stray – trust us.

4) DON’T over-exfoliate

It can be really tempting to scrub your skin to rid it of dulling dead skin cells and surface-level impurities. But too much exfoliation can do more harm than good, stripping your complexion of natural hydrating oils while damaging your protective skin barrier, leading to redness, inflammation, dryness, tightness, peeling, flaking & sudden breakouts. Choose a mild and gentle exfoliator and don’t overdo it.

Sensitive or Dry Skin Types: Exfoliate only once or twice a week.

Normal or Combination Skin Types: Exfoliate two to three times a week.

Oily or Blemish-Prone Skin Types: Exfoliate two to four times a week, but if redness appears, stop until healed, then reduce the frequency.

5) DO get your final facial 1 week before your wedding – but no later!

One week before your wedding is the perfect time to get your final facial – but there are a few things to avoid. Chemical peels or microdermabrasion are a no-go, and you should stick to what’s been working in your regular facials, to avoid confusing or aggravating your skin.
