The latest brand to join Debenhams is Seekd, an alternative marketplace for independent jewellery designers working to create more sustainably-made pieces.
In anticipation for this exciting launch, we sat down with Fay Cannings, Seekd's founder, to know more about the brand's journey and purpose, plus get a sneak peek of her current wish list.
How did the Seekd journey start?
"I worked throughout my career as an advisor to small businesses, so when I set up Seekd it felt like the right time. I wanted to establish a platform to support other small businesses and help with their growth. After a variety of research - and some exposure with the jewellery industry - I decided Seekd needed to be born to bring together talented jewellery designers, makers and customers looking for quality choices – especially designers working in a planet friendly way. I carried out a lot of outreach with the industry and other partners and it all gathered momentum from there, it felt meant to be."
Which qualities do you look for to know a certain accessory is a timeless investment piece?
"It has to be made with high quality metals, stones and materials, with skill, attention to detail and a design that reveals the craftsmanship that’s gone into it. Our style is unique, the rest we can have fun with!"
What’s the most innovative ethical technique you’ve seen from a Seekd designer?
"This is a tricky one! I think when designers are end-to-end ethical it’s just perfect. From carbon friendly studios, sourcing, using recycled or fair trade materials and sustainable packaging to minimising wastage all the way and using offcuts if possible. For example, the technique of lost wax carving, which many of the Seekd designers use, is a beautiful, considered process combined with eco metals."
Your 2024 predictions for jewellery
"I think it's going to be about going big and bold – from shoulder skimming earrings to chunky cuffs. I’d also love to see a resurgence of the brooch, as it has such an interesting history. I think vintage will continue to grow and you can never beat the classic hero pieces such as hoops and pearls with a twist."

A cocktail ring that speaks to you, or a colour pop with some interesting irregular gemstones could be on the list!
