She decides to take her own life rather than face imprisonment or execution. In the novel, Cleopatra is portrayed as a complex and tragic figure. She is a brilliant and powerful ruler, but she is also deeply flawed. She is vain and manipulative, and she is ultimately undone by her own ambition. However, she is also a sympathetic character, and her death is a moving and tragic event. The novel is a historical fiction, but it is also a work of historical scholarship. Ebers did extensive research on the life of Cleopatra, and he incorporated many historical details into the novel.
