"The Hosts of the Air" by Joseph A. Altsheler is a novel about a young man named John Scott, who becomes a soldier during World War I. The story takes place in the trenches of the Western Front, where John and his comrades face the constant danger of enemy attacks and bombardments. Despite the grim and dangerous conditions, John is determined to do his duty and fight for his country. Along the way, he meets a variety of characters, including his fellow soldiers, officers, and civilians caught up in the war. Throughout the novel, Johns experiences change him, turning him from a naive and innocent young man into a battlehardened veteran. Eventually, he becomes part of a daring mission to take down a German observation balloon, known as a "sausage," that is used to spy on Allied forces. The mission is fraught with danger, but John and his comrades are determined to succeed. The novel concludes with an exciting and actionpacked climax, as John and his fellow soldiers engage in a fierce battle with the enemy to bring down the sausage and secure victory for the Allied forces.
