In return they teach him how artists and other creatives live in a reality apart from the ordinary world, and why their values must be preserved if the world is to become more tolerant and accepting of differences. The major theme of the book is that love, awareness, and the creative spirit can help avoid the mistakes of the past that led to the planets destruction.
