Lime Essential Oil is extracted from the peel of Citrus aurantifolia, commonly known as Mexican or West Indian lime, using cold expression for unripe fruit or steam distillation for ripe fruit. The oil has a sharp, uplifting citrus aroma and ranges in colour from pale yellow to light olive. When used in an oil burner, it helps stimulate a tired mind and can ease anxiety, apathy, and depression. Lime oil is also valued for reducing fevers linked to colds, sore throats, and flu while supporting the immune system and relieving symptoms of coughs, bronchitis, sinusitis, and asthma. It may assist with arthritis, rheumatism, poor circulation, obesity, and cellulite. For the skin, it helps reduce oiliness and acne and can be useful for cuts, insect bites, and herpes, though cold-pressed lime oil may cause photosensitivity and irritation. Originally native to Asia, lime trees are now widely cultivated in warm regions such as Italy, the West Indies, and the Americas. The fruits begin green and ripen to yellow, usually growing to about two inches in diameter. Limes were introduced to Europe by the Moors before spreading to the Americas, and although they contain less vitamin C than lemons, they were historically carried on long sea voyages to help prevent scurvy caused by vitamin C deficiency.
