Mandarin Petitgrain oil is also extracted in smaller quantities by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs. The oil is golden yellow-orange and has the refreshing aroma of a fresh orange. Several varieties of citrus fruits fall under the Mandarin category, including Satsuma, Clementine, Dancy, Honey, Pixie, and tangerines. This oil is known for being gentle enough to be used safely on children and pregnant women, making it one of the few oils that can be used in this way. It has a tonic and stimulating effect on both the stomach and liver, which makes it beneficial for digestive issues. Mandarin oil is also effective for treating acne, oily skin, and spots. Additionally, it is thought to assist with fluid retention and obesity. When diluted to 1-2% in a carrier oil, it can be gently massaged onto a child's tummy to alleviate discomfort. A few drops in a bath can help calm hyperactive children. When used in an oil burner, it can lift the mood, dispelling depression and relieving anxiety. Mandarin oranges were traditionally offered as gifts to the mandarins of China, which is how the fruit got its name. In France, it is considered a safe remedy for indigestion in children and a strengthening aid for the digestive system and liver in the elderly. Native to Southern China and the Far East, the Mandarin orange was introduced to Europe in 1805 and to America in 1845.
