Latin Name: Pogostemon cablin Part of Plant Used: Dried Leaves Source: Indonesia Extraction Method: Steam Distillation Patchouli Oil is extracted from the Pogostemon cablin plant, part of the mint family. It has a rich musky-sweet, spicy aroma and is native to Malaysia and India, where it is known as ‘puchaput.’ The name ‘patchouli’ comes from the Tamil term ‘pachchai ilai,’ meaning green leaf. The oil is obtained from young leaves that are dried, fermented, and steam-distilled, and its fragrance becomes richer with age. Patchouli oil is highly valued in skincare for its ability to support scar healing and promote healthier-looking skin. In Eastern countries, it is commonly used in potpourris and linen sachets for its aroma and its natural ability to repel insects and bedbugs. It is believed to calm emotions, ease anxiety and depression, and help create a warm, intimate atmosphere when used in an oil burner. Added to bath water, patchouli oil is said to support skin and scalp health, assist with fungal issues, fluid retention, cellulite, and constipation. Its strong tissue-regenerating qualities may help accelerate healing and combat infections associated with acne, eczema, sores, ulcers, and athlete’s foot. Historically, dried patchouli leaves were placed between Indian cashmere shawls shipped to Victorian England to protect them from moths. The unique scent became essential for authentic shawls.
