If you are new to carnivorous plants, this Drosera is a great option, because it's so much easier to grow than the ever-popular Venus flytrap. Forming a dense, basal rosette of spoon-shaped leaves, which often develop an orange-red flush when grown in brighter light, not only do these leaves look great, but insects are lured in (and trapped by) the sticky hairs that form on their upper surface. Place 'Princess Alice' close to other houseplants that may have fungus gnats living on their compost, and she will happily help to keep their numbers in check. Please note that the pot in the photograph is not supplied with the plant (which is sent out in a simple nursery pot). Home care: This carnivorous plant should be watered from below during the growing season. The easiest way to do this is to stand the pot in a saucer that is filled with 1cm of soft water. Ideally the pot and water-filled saucer should be kept on a tray of gravel as this will help keep the humidity high. When the plant is dormant, water only when the compost gets dry, making sure the excess can drain away freely. Pot on in spring using a specialist compost.
