The Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet is a modern single-seater twin-engine fighter derived directly from the original McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet project. Wider and heavier than its predecessor is characterized by significantly improved flight and combat characteristics. Recognizable for the shape of the wings, which guarantee high maneuverability, air intakes and tail rudder entered service with the U.S. Navy in the early 2000s to replace the F-14 Tomcat and to carry out the fleet's air defense missions. Equipped with great autonomy and a decidedly improved avionics, it is armed with a 20mm M61 gun. and can carry an offensive cargo consisting of air-to-air missiles. The aircraft's great operational flexibility allows to effectively carry out air defense, ground attack, close support, and interdiction missions.
