Even though it may seem like the school year just ended, it’s never too early to start thinking about your shopping checklist for the term ahead.

THE CHECKLIST

The new school year is stressful enough, if you don’t want to miss out on your child’s uniform size or spend the last day of the holidays going from shop to shop for what it seems like the last Peppa Pig lunchbox on the face of earth (true story), read on for everything you need to be prepared to start the new school year with extra peace of mind.

First, make sure you consult your school’s uniform guidelines as the uniform policy varies from school to school, but for a standard expect to stock up on polo shirts or school shirts, shorts and trousers or a skirt or dress for the summer term.

THE UNIFORM

• 5 Shirts or polo shirts • 2 Pairs of trousers, skirts or pinafores • 1 Jumper • 1 Pair of shoes • 10 Pairs of socks or 5 pairs of tights • 1 Waterproof coat • 1 Winter coat • 2 Blazers (if needed) • 1 Tie (if needed)

Our mums recommend: If you can go for easy-iron shirts to save you time and wait until two or three weeks before the start of term to buy school shoes to avoid having to buy them twice through the year.

The Accessories

• 1 Beanie hat • 2 Pairs of knitted gloves • 1 Summer hat • 20 hair ties or 2 headbands • 1 Painting tabard (for younger children)

THE P.E. KIT

• 1 Gym bag • 1 Pair of trainers • 1 Pair of shorts • 2 T-shirts (check your uniform guide for accepted colours) • 1 Pair of joggers

The extras: This is the fun part, the essentials that allow kids to stamp their own style on school life. From backpacks to pencil cases, let them help you pick what makes them happy.

THE EXTRAS

• 1 Backpack • 1 Lunch box • 1 Water bottle (if not included with the lunch box) • 1 Pencil case • Stationary basics (pencils, pens, coloured crayons, pencil sharpener, eraser)
