A pretty, compact grass for small gardens. Position: full sun Soil: light, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: July to September Hardiness: frost hardy (will need winter protection in cold areas) A charming perennial grass that forms a compact, low mound and produces long-lasting, soft, pinkish, brush-like flowers in late summer that resemble squirrel tails. The bright green leaves turn yellow in autumn and then brown throughout winter. It's a fairly undistinguished plant until the flowers appear, so use it alongside spring bulbs or early-flowering perennials. Garden care: A generous layer of mulch in autumn will help keep the roots warmer in winter. Prune back the previous years growth each spring.
