The Problem with PositivityThere is a quiet pressure humming beneath much of modern life, acultural demand that insists we smile even when our hearts arebreaking. These phrases are presented as wisdom, but behind theirpastel fonts and upbeat cadence lies something far morecomplicated.The problem is not positivity itself. Hope, resilience, and theability to see possibility in hardship are essential human strengths.But in recent decades, positivity has been stripped of nuance andmarketed as a panacea. It has been turned into an ideologyonethat insists our attitude alone determines the shape of our lives, andthat failure to thrive must always mean a failure to "thinkpositive." This ideology is what I call toxic optimism.
