Find yourself in the tropical rainforest with the Alocasia Portodora! This gorgeous plant has huge leaves with curled sides and will instantly bring a jungle-like vibe to any space. The Alocasia is part of the Araceae family and originates in the South-East Asian tropics. The Alocasia is also known as the elephant ear. The plants get this name because of the huge leaves that can grow as big as 1,5 meters in diameter in the wild! Don't worry though, they won't grow this big indoors.
The Alocasia prefers to stand in soil that is constantly slightly moist. In winter the plant uses less water, but make sure the soil does not dry out! You can check the soil regularly by sticking a finger in the soil. To prevent root rot, give the plant a small amount of water at a time. This will prevent a layer of water from forming at the bottom of the pot. The Alocasia likes to be in a bright spot with at least 5 hours of sunlight. If it does not get enough sunlight, it will grow long stems that can no longer support the weight of the leaves, causing them to droop or even break. The plant likes moist air and likes to be watered weekly.
