The Aeschynanthus Twister is a special plant with long green tendrils that hang downwards. The leaves of the plant are curled, which is where it gets its nickname 'Twister' from. Originally, the Aeschynanthus comes from Malaysia and other areas in South-East Asia. Here Aeschynanthus means 'flowers that are ashamed'. It is not clear where this name comes from, it could be because the flowers stay hidden for a long time or because the flowers have a red colour. The flowers of the plant are tubular and reddish-orange, which makes them look very similar to lipstick. The nickname of the Aeschynanthus Twister is therefore 'The lipstick plant'.
The Aeschynanthus Twister is a plant of tropical origin. Because of this, it prefers a lot of light, but not full sun. Furthermore, the Lipstick plant is very sensitive to too much water. So it is best not to water the plant too much, the potting soil is allowed to dry up between waterings. In the winter, the plant hibernates a kind of hibernation so it does not bloom, but during spring it blooms very easily! What is also good to know is that the Aeschynanthus Twister is not poisonous. In the rainforest it can grow up to 3 meters tall, but in the living room it doesn't go that far.
