Aphelandra is native to the subtropical regions of the Americas. It is also called the zebra plant because of its striking leaves that are a dark green color with white stripes. The plant is mainly kept for its leaves, but it can also bloom remarkably in the spring. It then gets yellow flowers somewhat reminiscent of the flower of most Bromeliads.
Important with the Aphelandra is the temperature. Preferably he stands in a higher temperature, throughout the year. After all, it likes a lot of warmth. The plant also likes a lot of light, but not direct sunlight. A north-facing window is ideal. The Aphelandra also prefers high humidity. Spraying the leaves about once a week will do it good. Spraying is not useful when it is flowering because the flowers can rot quickly. Watering once a week is sufficient. Be sure to allow the soil to dry out between waterings. In addition, it is important with the Aphelandra that no water remains in the pot so that the roots do not rot. Be careful: the Aphelandra can be toxic to pets.
