It went to sea under the command of Captain Ernst Lindemann and at the time was the largest and most powerful Battleship. It could reach a top speed of 30.1 knots (approx. 56 km/H). Its weaponry included 8 380 mm QFG L/47 twin guns, 12 150 mm QFG L/55 Twin guns 16 x 105 mm L/65 A/A and 16 37 mm A/A and 12 20 mm A/A cannon. It sank, in the North Atlantic, at the end of May during the Second World War after a heavy battle with units of the British Royal Navy. The majority of its crew was lost.
