How to keep your home cool in the summer

It’s no secret that in the UK, we’re not exactly equipped to deal with the trappings of a long, hot summer. And while these summers tend to be (somewhat) few and far between, we’re still likely to get hit with a fleeting heatwave at some point in the year – but when this might occur is anyone’s guess. We’re in the business of staying prepared for an unprecedented scorcher, so if you’d like to be too, read on to discover the best ways to keep your home cool in the summer…

Top Tips for Cooling Your Home:

1) Invest in a fan or portable air con unit

First up, and likely something you’ve already considered, summer’s the perfect time to invest in a hardworking dan or portable air con unit. It’s the best way to circulate air round the room and cut through the stifling, constant heat, giving you a blast of cooling relief every time you turn it on. Fan’s are the best way to keep YOU cool, but air con systems are useful for keeping the entire room cool.

2) Point your fan AT an open window

Hear us out, because we know this sounds silly, but pointing the face of your fan at an open window is an unsung piece of advice that isn’t as common knowledge as it ought to be. The science behind it is that it pushes hot air out and draws the cooler air from outside – although it’s worth noting this definitely works best when it’s colder outdoors than it is in.

3) Close blinds & curtains during the day

If the sun’s beating down through your window, it’s time to block the rays. Draw blinds and curtains closed in the daytime to prevent the heat from penetrating through the glass and into your home – you’ll thank us for this tip later on, when you’re bedroom isn’t quite the sauna you expected come night time.

4) Keep windows open through the night

The second the temperature drops to a bearable degrees, crack those windows and leave them open through the night. We know bugs see an open window as an invitation to make themselves at home, so if you can invest in a fly screen, we recommend this too!

5) Avoid cooking as much as possible

Did someone say – picky bits in the garden or on your balcony? Keep the oven, airfryer and grill switched off if you can, as standing directly by a heat appliance is the quickest way to get you hot and bothered on a scorching summer’s day.

Best Fans for Cooling a Room

Whether your existing one’s given up the ghost, or you never had one to begin with, every Brit needs an emergency fan on-hand for those (rare) hotter days. Get heatwave-ready with the best fans to keep any room icy-cool…

Best Aircon Unit For Cooling a Room

A summer-friendly piece worth investing in, aircon units are useful for setting the exact temperature you want the room to be. They work by drawing in warmer air and using a refrigerant to cool it down, before dispersing it back into the air to help chill you out and keep the heat at bay.
