Supplied as a bare root tree approximately 120–150cm tall, it is grown and selected by Direct Plants in Norfolk, UK. Crab Apple Tree. In spring, the tree produces clusters of white blossom, followed by heavy crops of large orange-red crab apples with a distinctive pear-shaped form. The fruits have a sharp-sweet flavour and are suitable for jellies, preserves, and cooking. The tree develops a balanced, upright habit and provides seasonal interest from blossom through autumn fruit. Fully hardy and adaptable, ‘John Downie’ grows well in most well-drained soils and suits a sunny or lightly shaded position.
